Packing for an outback drive

What to carry on a remote Australian drive, why each item is on the list, and the three things people most often leave behind. Written for sealed-highway remote travel and for unsealed tracks, which are different problems.

Two different trips

"Outback" covers two situations that need different preparation. The first is remote sealed-highway travel: the Stuart Highway, the Eyre Highway, the Barrier Highway, the run west to Longreach. These roads are well surfaced, carry regular traffic including road trains, and have roadhouses every 150 to 300 km. The realistic risks are fuel planning, fatigue, animal strike and a breakdown in a place with no phone coverage.

The second is unsealed remote travel: the Gibb River Road, the Oodnadatta and Birdsville tracks, the Savannah Way, the internal tracks in Kakadu. Here the surface itself is the hazard. Corrugations destroy tyres and suspension, sharp gibber stone cuts sidewalls, sand and river crossings demand technique, and traffic can be light enough that a day passes without another vehicle. Everything below applies to both, but the tyre, recovery and communications sections matter far more on the second.

Water, and why the figure is higher than you think

The standard working figure for remote travel in Australia is a minimum of five litres per person per day for drinking and basic use, plus a reserve sufficient for several days beyond the planned trip. On a four-day track crossing with two people, that means at least 40 litres carried, and most experienced travellers carry more.

The reserve exists because the failure mode is being stationary, not being thirsty. If the vehicle stops in a place with no coverage, you may be waiting a day or more, in heat, with no shade beyond what the vehicle provides. Water in that scenario is the difference between an inconvenience and a serious situation.

Carry it in more than one container. A single large tank that splits leaves you with nothing; two or three separate vessels stowed in different places do not fail together. Bore water at station stays and remote campgrounds is frequently not potable and is signposted as such — do not plan on refilling from it.

Prepare the vehicle before the list

No amount of packing compensates for a vehicle that was not serviced before leaving. The failures that strand people on remote roads are mundane and predictable: tyres near the end of their life, a battery that was already marginal, a cooling system that was fine at sea level in Melbourne and is not fine at 42 °C outside Marla, and suspension bushes that corrugations finish off.

Have the vehicle serviced with the trip described to the mechanic, not as a routine interval. Ask specifically about tyre age as well as tread depth — rubber degrades with time and heat regardless of kilometres, and a five-year-old spare that has lived on a roof rack is not a spare you want to rely on. Check the coolant, the belts and the air filter, which loads up quickly on dust.

Load matters too. A roof rack raises the centre of gravity and increases fuel consumption noticeably, and an overloaded vehicle handles badly on gravel exactly when handling matters. Know the vehicle's load rating and stay inside it; where you are towing, know the tow ball weight as well as the total.

Tyres and recovery

One spare is enough on the sealed highways. On corrugated gravel, two is the standard, because the most common failure is a sidewall cut and the second one tends to follow the first within the same day. Check that both are actually inflated and that you have the tools to change them on soft ground.

A compressor and a gauge

Lowering tyre pressures is the single most effective thing you can do to reduce corrugation damage and improve traction on sand. That only works if you can reinflate before returning to sealed road — driving at road speed on lowered pressures overheats and destroys tyres.

A tyre repair kit

A plug kit deals with tread punctures without using a spare, and is worth learning to use before you need it. It does not fix a sidewall cut, which is why the second spare exists.

Recovery gear you can actually use

A rated recovery strap, shackles or soft shackles, a shovel and recovery boards cover most bogging in sand or mud. Rated equipment matters — an unrated strap under load is genuinely dangerous. If you have never used any of it, practise somewhere harmless first.

Fuel

Plan fuel around the longest gap on your route, not the average. On the Oodnadatta Track, the gap between William Creek and Oodnadatta is around 200 km on rough surface, where consumption is far higher than on highway. A vehicle that manages 700 km to a tank on the Hume may manage 450 on corrugations with a roof load and lowered pressures.

Carry jerry cans if the longest gap exceeds about sixty per cent of your realistic range, and mount them properly — on a rack or secured inside a sealed container, not loose in the cabin. The habit worth building is simple: fill at every roadhouse, regardless of what the gauge says. Roadhouses keep their own hours, occasionally run out, and are sometimes closed when you arrive. Treating each one as the last available fuel until proven otherwise removes an entire class of problem.

Communications and navigation

Mobile coverage does not exist across most of remote Australia, and where it does it is usually one network only, near a town. A satellite messenger or a personal locator beacon is standard equipment for unsealed remote travel and is a sensible precaution even on the remote sealed highways. A beacon is for genuine emergencies; a two-way satellite messenger also lets you tell someone you are simply delayed, which prevents unnecessary searches.

Carry offline maps. Navigation apps that stream map tiles are useless without coverage, so download the region before you leave town, and carry a paper map as well — it does not run out of battery and it shows you the wider context that a phone screen does not.

Tell someone your route and your expected arrival, and tell them when you change it. In remote Australia, the person who knows you are overdue is the mechanism by which anyone comes looking.

If something goes wrong

Stay with the vehicle. It is far easier to spot from the air than a person on foot, it provides shade, and it carries your water. Walking for help in remote Australia is how straightforward breakdowns become serious. In an emergency, call 000; where there is no mobile coverage, use a satellite messenger or activate a beacon.
