Privacy policy

What Clear Horizons collects, which in practice is almost nothing, why, and how to ask us about it. Last updated 14 July 2026.

Summary

Clear Horizons does not run analytics, does not set cookies, does not embed third-party scripts, trackers, social widgets, fonts or advertising, and does not have accounts or logins. The only information stored by this site is a list of routes you shortlist in the trip planner, and that list is kept in your own browser and never sent to us.

This policy explains that in full, and describes how we handle personal information when you contact us by email.

Information we collect

Data stored in your browser

The trip planner saves your shortlisted routes using your browser's local storage, under the key ch_saved_routes. It holds nothing but the identifiers of the routes you added — no name, no email address, no location, nothing about you. It is stored on your device, is not transmitted anywhere, and is not readable by us. You can remove it at any time with the "Clear shortlist" button on the planner, or by clearing site data in your browser settings.

The planner also records your filter selections in the page address, so that a link to a set of results can be shared. That happens entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

The contact form

The form on our contact page helps you compose a message to us. When you submit it, your device opens your email app with the details filled in, addressed to hello@clearhorizones.com. We only receive what you choose to send.

Email you send us

When you email hello@clearhorizones.com, we receive whatever you put in the message: typically your name, your email address and the content of your enquiry. We use it to answer you, and where you have reported an error, to correct the relevant page. We do not add you to any mailing list, we do not use your address for anything else, and we do not sell, rent or disclose it.

Server logs

Like most websites, our hosting provider keeps standard access logs — the IP address of the request, the time, the page requested and the browser's user agent string. These are generated by the hosting infrastructure for security and operational purposes and are retained by the provider under its own arrangements. We do not use them for analytics, do not combine them with anything else and do not attempt to identify individuals from them.

Cookies and tracking

This site sets no cookies. There is no analytics package, no advertising network, no tag manager, no social media pixel, no session cookie and no consent banner — because with nothing to consent to, a banner would be theatre. If we ever introduce anything that sets a cookie or performs analytics, this policy will be updated before it goes live and appropriate consent will be sought at that time.

How long information is kept

Trip planner data stays in your browser until you clear it; we have no copy and no ability to delete it for you. Email correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful to answer you or to support a correction, and is deleted when it is not — in practice, within two years. Hosting access logs are retained by our hosting provider under its own retention schedule.

Disclosure

We do not sell, rent or trade personal information, and we do not disclose it to third parties for marketing. The only parties who handle any data associated with this site are our hosting provider, which serves the pages, and our email provider, which carries messages you send us. We may disclose information where we are required to by Australian law.

We do not knowingly collect information from children. Because we collect almost nothing from anyone, this is largely academic, but it is the position.

Your rights

Clear Horizons handles personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles set out in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). You may ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Write to hello@clearhorizones.com with "Privacy request" in the subject line, or to Clear Horizons, PO Box 2184, Hobart TAS 7001. We aim to respond within thirty days.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled a privacy matter, tell us first and give us a chance to fix it. If that does not resolve things, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, which handles privacy complaints in Australia.

External links and security

Our guides link to state park services, road authorities and other official bodies. Those sites have their own privacy policies and we have no control over them; this policy covers only clearhorizones.com. This site is served over HTTPS and contains no external requests of any kind, which is both a privacy measure and the reason pages load as quickly as they do.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page is updated and the change takes effect from that date. Where a change is material — the introduction of analytics, for example — it will be described here rather than made quietly.
