How the figures are worked out
Distances are road distances rounded to the nearest 10 km, measured along the route as described rather than the shortest possible line between the endpoints. Where a route is a loop, the figure is the full circuit from and back to the starting town.
Durations are the number of days we think the route works at, not the minimum it can be driven in. The Great Ocean Road can be driven in a single day; we list it at three because the road averages closer to 45 km/h through the Otways and because the well-known coastal viewpoints are congested between about 11 am and 3 pm. Where a route includes an unsealed section, the daily distance assumption drops sharply — 300 km on a corrugated gravel road is a full day.
The month filter reflects the practical season, not the calendar. Northern routes are limited to the dry season, roughly May to September, because unsealed roads and river crossings in the Top End and the Kimberley are unreliable or closed outside it. Tasmanian routes are weighted to December through March. Inland routes across New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland favour the shoulder months, when daytime temperatures are workable and walking tracks are not closed for heat. If a filter combination returns nothing, remove the month first — it is the most restrictive control on the page.
Nothing in this tool is a booking, a quote or a recommendation of any operator. Conditions change: check the relevant state road authority for closures and the relevant park service for access, fees and permits before you drive.
